GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Israeli military vehicles crossed into the Gaza Strip east of Rafah on Thursday, as residents heard heavy gunfire but no injuries were reported.

Three tanks and four bulldozers crossed near the al-Nahda neighborhood east of al-Shouka, witnesses said. They said forces fired guns and launched smoke bombs.

A Palestinian militant escaped the area amid heavy shooting, witnesses said. His motorcycle was burned.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said there was no army activity in the area.

On Wednesday, explosions shook a southern Israeli city near Egypt. Israel's military suspected a cross-border rocket attack though searches have thus far turned up no evidence.
